Self-Sharpening is great for the high traffic classroom Jun 15, 2007
By J. Story I purchased 2 of these back in 10/06 and I really do love this sharpener, especially for the classroom. I have nearly 165 students in and out of my art classroom each day, so needless to say pencil use (from name writing to drawing projects) is an everyday occurrence. Hand-cranking sharpeners weren't cutting it (especially for kinders - 2nd graders) and regular electric sharpeners couldn't bear the brunt of constant student use. Then I came across a self-sharpening electric pencil sharpener and bought a couple to test them out. To me, they were the most fabulous thing since sliced bread, but when I went back for more, they were discontinued (total disappointment). With some searching I came across the iPoint. Same concept as my other self-sharpening ones, but top loading and cooler design.
Here's the really fabulous part about self-sharpening pencil sharpeners - EVERY STUDENT can use them!!! Yes, my kindergareners are pros at it and take care as to make sure their classmates are using the sharpeners correctly. Yet, I do catch some of them breaking their pencils on purpose just so they can use the sharpeners-slightly frustrating but also amusing. Sometimes my younger students do better using the sharperners than my middle school students - go figure. Another great thing is that I don't have to sharpen pencils anymore!
Draw backs: 1 - they can be a bit sensitive 2 - DON"T ever put in a short pencil - the sharpener will NOT auto eject it. You will end up sitting there forever trying to pick out the pencil-not fun! Stick with sharpening pencils 4.5" or more to be on the safe side. 3 - These sharpeners don't like colored pencils either. 4 - I got a bum one and had a couple of issues with returning it to the company and them FINALLY sending me the correct make and model. I was not about to accept a cheaper version.
Take note - all the makes and models look the same, but they don't all work the same. Make sure that if you want the auto eject version that the description says it or you will end up with a dummed down version that just has auto shut off when it's done sharpening.
I would love for a compnay to come out with one (exactly same concept: self-feed, self-eject), but can take more of a beating (industrial/school strength).

Pencil Sharpener May 19, 2007
By S. Williams We received a used sharpener and it works like new. It's the best sharpener I've ever seen. You just put your pencil in push it in a little and the sharpener does the rest. When it's done it pops back up to be removed and your ready to sharpen the next one. We did about 3 or 4 dozen pencils and it never overheated. I think it's because you don't have to press and hold wondering if it's sharpened or not.

Best little sharpener ever. Jan 31, 2009
By R. Self This thing is so cool... put your pencil in and it automatically advances the pencil into the sharpener and when perfectly sharpened, backs it out and shuts off. The blades are great and sharpen with ease. Takes two sizes. You'll be sharpening every pencil in your house just to watch it work.

so far so good! Aug 31, 2009
By Thoma Thacker I received this sharpener a few weeks ago and so far it's held up really well. The motor seems strong and it makes short work of sharpening pencils. The only downfall I can see is you have to empty the shavings out often, and it's kind of clumsy to do. I can start the sharpening, and turn around to keep an eye on my students while it's sharpening, and when I hear it auto shut off, I pop in a new one.I would buy this item again if I could.
I just got a cool new toy Oct 27, 2011
By Loretta Pirozzi This thing is really cool, especially since I bought it with Amazon Points. The iPoint starts running as you insert the pencil and grabs it to feed it to the blades, then it stops, BUT WAIT, then it rotates the other way and the pencil raises up from the blade area. Awesome! It produces a long slender point which works amazingly well. I expected it to break right away but it didn't - it's perfectly even. iPoint eats up pencils but if you can afford this sharpener you can probably keep up with its appetite. Be sure to have extra pencils around so you can show your friends.
5 stars for functionality, ? stars for performance over time.
